WASHINGTON (AFX) - Marta Brito Perez has been named the Department of Homeland Security's chief human capital officer and will assume that role later this month.
Perez will join DHS from the federal Office of Personnel Management, where she has led the human capital leadership and merit system division since 2002. An OPM spokeswoman said Tuesday that the transition is expected to take place later this month.
"Her background, and the expertise she brings from OPM, will be a tremendous asset to our work force and will ensure our employees have a human capital officer that can meet the demanding mission requirements of DHS," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a statement.
Before joining the federal government, Perez served as the director of the Office of Human Resources for Montgomery County, Md., and prior to that as a manager with the International Association of Chiefs of Police for more than 17 years.
She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and her master's degree from Johns Hopkins University.
President Bush first announced the appointment on Aug. 15.
