WASHINGTON (AFX) - The US public is growing increasingly pessimistic about the prospects for victory in Iraq, a poll showed today, with only 28 pct saying the US will probably or definitely win the conflict.
The USA Today/Gallup Poll result was the lowest since the question was first asked in September 2005 and down from 35 pct in December.
Some 46 pct said they do not think the war can be won.
The poll also showed that 59 pct believe the war was a mistake, the same as in September 2005, and the highest level in the 58 times the question has been asked since the war started in March 2003.
President George W Bush's popularity remained low, with only 33 pct approving of his performance while 63 pct disapproved, according to the USA Today/Gallup poll. Last month, 37 pct approved while 59 pct did not.
The poll was conducted March 2-4 among 1,010 adults and has a three percentage point margin of error.
