BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - European finance ministers meeting in the Belgian capital next week will discuss who will succeed Rodrigo Rato as director general of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in October, a spokeswoman for the German Finance Ministry said.
The Eurogroup, which comprises the finance ministers of the 13 euro zone countries, is scheduled to meet on Monday. Ecofin, which comprises the economic and finance ministers of the 27 EU countries, will meet on Tuesday.
By tradition, the post of IMF managing director is reserved for a European while the presidency of the IMF's sister institution, the World Bank, goes to an American.
For years, developing countries have been protesting against the practice and have called for an open competition for both posts.
